The Purest City in the World — Perth
— Because it’s the city furthest from any other major city, because it’s the most isolated, it’s also the purest. Crawling out of the red-eye, cross-continent flight still half-asleep, I was instantly struck by something different — the sun was dazzlingly bright, yet it was only 7am (Perth local time, two hours ahead of Beijing). The sunlight was already so intense. Riding from the airport into the city with the window half-open, my body told me I’d arrived on a different continent, in a different world.
My first impression: How is the sky here so clear? Not a cloud in sight, just the occasional tuft of cloud like scattered cotton balls. The sky and earth feel so vast and open that for someone used to the crowds and bustle of big cities, it’s honestly a bit overwhelming. Driving down these empty roads, with so few cars, almost no pedestrians, and passing the occasional unique house showing off its owner’s creativity. The vegetation isn’t especially lush — tall trees stand alone or in small groups, not forming groves. More common are bushes, wildflowers, and large stretches of golden grass covering fields and rolling hills. Since it’s winter in Australia, the grass is sun-bleached and yellow.
As we neared the city, the skyline’s spires appeared in the distance. Suddenly, a vast expanse of dazzling blue came into view — was this Earth or some fairyland? I blinked, trying to take it in. Oh, of course! This is the famous Swan Lake, the soul of Perth, just like West Lake is to Hangzhou. The lake is so wide that we drove along its edge for quite a while. Opening the window and sticking my head out, I felt the whole lake — the whole city — embracing me. This crystal-clear blue, this pure air and water, enveloped me entirely as if I’d stepped into a fairytale world.
For the next three days in Perth, I found myself drawn again and again to this Swan Lake — a magical, spiritual place, an unparalleled lake. It became an obsession; its water seemed to seep into my nerves and flow through my veins, until I felt I’d become part of the lake itself.
