The Art Gallery of New South Wales is one of Australia's three major art galleries. Entry is free, though some special exhibitions charge admission. The gallery spans five floors - not small at all - and requires at least 2 hours for a thorough visit. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, and numerous contemporary art pieces.
The gallery's oil painting collection doesn't feature many works by major masters - we only saw two Picasso pieces. However, many of the contemporary art pieces are quite interesting.
The gallery is filled with various unusual contemporary art installations. One Korean artist's work features a TV on the left showing footage of her creating the piece, while on the right is the strange costume she wore during creation - yes, the three-headed figure! The artwork itself is in the middle. No wonder contemporary art often leaves people puzzled!
There's a beautiful large window in the second-floor atrium. The "General" (nickname) insisted on taking photos there, showing how martial artists often appreciate scenery more than art.
One of the most interesting pieces was an installation of colorful soft balls connected by transparent threads filling an entire room, transitioning from cool to warm colors from top to bottom. The colors were absolutely beautiful, though the artist's message remains unclear. This piece appears on the gallery's promotional materials, indicating how highly they value it.
