Lake Mountain – Melbourne, Australia
Located in the northeast corner of Melbourne, Lake Mountain is a natural ski spot perfect for a weekend self-drive getaway.
It took a full two and a half hours to drive from Melbourne city to Lake Mountain. When we reached the toll gate, the temperature showed 7°C. After winding up the mountain road, we were greeted by snow-covered hills. It wasn’t quite the alpine scene I had imagined—more like the Winter Olympics—but instead, apart from a small slope for kids to toboggan with their parents, there wasn’t much else.
What remained were just some little hills surrounded by dead trees. There were five of us in our early twenties, too embarrassed to try the skis, so we dove into the woods and had a snowball fight instead. After just an hour and a half, we’d had plenty of fun—frozen red hands, shoes full of melting snow, snowflakes stuck in our hair, and damp pants from sitting in the snow (which, by the way, makes for a nicely shaped impression!).
Tired and hungry, we headed back down the mountain. On the way home, we stumbled across a “mythical beast” farm—the famous “Grass Mud Horse” (aka alpaca). The gate was wide open but marked as private property, and none of us had the guts to trespass, so we had to give up. We passed a few other horse and sheep farms, stopping several times to search for these legendary animals, but always left disappointed. Mythical creatures really do live up to their name! I guess we’ll just have to visit another farm when the weather is warmer. All the way home we listened to a parody song about the ‘Grass Mud Horse’ set to the tune of the Smurfs, heading back a bit frustrated but still laughing...
