Hyde Park, located in central Sydney, was established in 1810 and has nearly 200 years of history.
By contrast, London's Hyde Park was, before the 18th century, the king's private deer hunting ground - exclusively reserved for royalty!
Sydney's Hyde Park occupies prime real estate in the city center, surrounded by St. Mary's Cathedral and the Royal Botanic Gardens, and is within close proximity to Darling Harbour and the Sydney Opera House.
At the park's center stands a fountain commemorating the Franco-Australian alliance during World War I. The fountain features a central bronze sculpture group, dominated by Apollo, the sun god, whose finger points eastward. Behind him, fan-shaped water jets represent the sun's rays. Below Apollo are three bronze sculptures: Diana, the goddess of hunting, and Theseus, the young hero representing hope.
