The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a single-arch bridge that once held the title of the world's largest single-span arch bridge. As one of Sydney's earliest iconic structures, it represents a remarkable feat of engineering. The bridge's journey from initial design in 1857 to completion in 1932 created a vital link between the harbor's northern and southern shores.

Construction began with the foundation work in 1924, and after more than eight years of labor, the bridge officially opened to traffic on March 19, 1932. The sheer scale of this engineering marvel is evident in its construction statistics: 52,800 tonnes of steel, 6 million rivets (with the largest weighing 3.5 kg), 95,000 cubic meters of concrete, and 17,000 cubic meters of granite for the pylons and piers. The project required 272,000 liters of paint to complete.

These impressive figures demonstrate the bridge's monumental scale, and the achievement of constructing such a massive structure over open water in the 1930s was truly extraordinary for its time.
