Daydream Somewhere Else (Great Ocean Road) — Australia Trip 7
Day 16, Great Ocean Road
The Great Ocean Road lies southwest of Melbourne, a nearly 300-kilometer coastal highway. It was opened to visitors as part of a national park in the early 1980s. After more than 20 years of development and promotion, it has become one of Australia’s few world-famous sightseeing routes. Besides linking Melbourne with the small towns along the western coast, the road features many ocean lookouts. The most iconic sight is the Twelve Apostles.
The Twelve Apostles have stood by the coast for around 20 million years. Formed from countless tiny skeletal fragments that accumulated, were buried beneath the sea, and later exposed by relentless waves and wind, they became the famed limestone stacks we see today.
Because their number and shapes once resembled Jesus’s twelve apostles, they were named after the biblical figures.
We planned to see the legendary lighthouse before driving the Great Ocean Road, but we got lost before we even saw it... After finally finding the way, we lost track of Hao and his wife’s car.

Finally found the lighthouse

Before the trip, Hao’s ideal was to chomp a lollipop, blast Xu Wei’s songs, and cruise along the Great Ocean Road... In reality, before we even started, we lost him. He kept circling to find our car, and by the time we hit the road, he was wiped out.

Along the Great Ocean Road, the weather flipped between overcast, rain, and sunshine. With every shift in the sky, the ocean changed color too.
