I've heard this legend: Rio and São Paulo fought over being the capital, which resulted in Brasília getting the honor. Similarly, Sydney and Melbourne's rivalry led to the creation of a special capital territory called Canberra.
We drove to Canberra, which sits at a notably higher elevation than Sydney. The first night's heavy rain washed the small city spotlessly clean. We went to a bar that had a 5 AUD entry fee, filled with countless people dancing wildly. I remember ordering a cocktail, though I've forgotten its name. After a night of drinking, I woke up the next morning in the cold air. We drove to Parliament House, the Chinese Embassy, and ANU. I fell in love with this city - its sparse population, cleanliness, like a complete garden. When I'm older, I hope to live there.
