Self-drive RV tour around Australia Days 19 - 20 - Cairns
Cairns is a place where you must stay for several days on every trip! At this point in the journey, even if you're hungry, tired, or covered in mosquito and fruit fly bites, it's all worth it! The place has great food, fun activities, and wonderful weather that instantly lifts your spirits! Compared to the previous few days, it feels like entering a completely different world!
Driving through Milla Milla (the gateway highway to Cairns) made the girl traveling with us want to marry a local farmer and settle down here right away!
Too bad I'm not a woman - if I were, such thoughts would be perfectly reasonable in this setting!
Just before truly entering Cairns, it gave the driver one more surprise!
A 20-minute cliff highway with over 300 turns - every time I drive through here I end up covered in sweat! But I have to say roads this good are rare - those who love cornering should come try it!
Although it's a very small city, taking only fifteen minutes to go from one end of downtown to the other, it has all the good food, drinks and fun activities you could want!
This huge outdoor swimming pool in the city center has white sand at the bottom. Many people bring their kids to swim, or families sit by the side having BBQ or sunbathing~ Find a patch of grass to lie down, and you can spend the whole afternoon there~ I realized that time passes easily this way - just lying in the sun, watching kids play in the water, tourists passing by, birds flying - what a carefree life~
How could there not be seafood feasts by the sea! O(∩_∩)O~
!
Why is Cairns famous? Its east coast encompasses most of the central to northern Great Barrier Reef. In this area, the outer reef is closest to the mainland (making day trips possible), and the average water depth is the shallowest (good for diving and snorkeling). The Great Barrier Reef seems inextricably linked with Cairns. The reef is North Queensland's most exciting attraction, and many people come to Cairns specifically for this natural wonder.
The Great Barrier Reef isn't actually one big reef, but is made up of about 2,900 individual reefs. It stretches 2,300 kilometers from north to south, with an area comparable to Britain (and Cairns is the most fully developed part, where you can take a helicopter to view it from above)
Choose a sunny day - though it takes an hour by boat to reach the outer reef, time flies quickly when you're sunbathing on deck with beautiful companions!
You can choose to snorkel, or do both snorkeling and scuba diving! (Being a bit greedy here)
After the free buffet, you can go straight to snorkeling!
To photograph more fish, I shamelessly snuck a piece of bread in my hand, and the result was...
(Lots of fish surrounding you)
For scuba diving, you need to learn basic hand signals and techniques from the instructor before diving. The oxygen tank is incredibly heavy, especially with the lead weights attached... They've set up ropes for beginners at the dive site, so you can hold onto them while descending slowly to the seabed~ After getting used to it, the instructor will take you to three spots. The first is to see Nemo, the little fish from Finding Nemo, hiding in sea anemones. The instructor will signal you to touch it and feel it~ Hmm, it feels fleshy and retracts when touched~ The second spot has something like a giant clam - touch the inside and it closes up~
Fishing in Cairns
The underwater world is amazing, especially when you can't speak, can't breathe through your nose, and often feel weightless and unbalanced. I highly recommend that anyone who loves swimming or is fascinated by the underwater world come experience it for themselves~~
After seeing so many fish but not eating any, what a shame! To make up for this, early in the morning we rented a boat to go fishing in the mangroves!
(First time being captain feels pretty good)
Seeing everyone fishing so seriously makes the captain feel gratified!
But what's most gratifying is that Brother Peter caught a big fish right away!
Imagine eating fish fresh from the catch!
Cairns Outdoor Activities - Skydiving
What a heavenly feast! No regrets now! O(∩_∩)O~
Just like that, two short days passed! Actually, there are many more fun things to do here, for example: skydiving
(Big brother looks mighty!)
But I believe that the legendary local Australian secret beach, Whitehaven, will give us even more surprises that we couldn't experience in Cairns! Looking forward to getting to Whitehaven soon!
G'night
