Brisbane — The University of Queensland (UQ)
The University of Queensland

Christmas on campus, blazing hot. UQ’s iconic Great Court.

The University of Queensland
Campus is basically an animal paradise—you’ll spot all kinds of creatures you can and can’t imagine. People and nature get along so well here. Spotted doves with a hilarious little crest; they go coo-coo-coo when they take off.

Flame tree, a close relative of the jacaranda.

UQ Lake is home to all kinds of waterbirds. You’ll also find turtles and eels, and lately a big pelican has moved in.

A poor Muscovy duck hides in a sliver of shade, zoning out. Not the prettiest, so the other ducks won’t hang with it...

Australian white ibis—the cheeky ones that love snatching food right out of your hand.

“Screaming cockatoos”—my nickname for them, because their call is... beyond words.

Roasting in the sun here—time for this old-timer to act cute and then hurry home to cool off.

Helmeted guineafowl on campus—practically domesticated. Whistle once and they’ll rush over for snacks.

Lizards everywhere—the Eastern Water Dragon. I just call them “East Water Dragons,” haha, very literal.

Unexpectedly found a masked lapwing chick! It darted into the leaf litter to hide, but I still spotted it, haha.

Here’s an adult masked lapwing—such a funny name. Learned it from a birding post; hope I got it right.
